Boss stakes out depot to catch fuel siphon gang using Hi tech CCTV systems
THE owner of a fuel depot in Sligo town staked out his own premises to catch high-tech oil thieves red-handed.
Damien McPartland, the owner of Sligo Fuels, had noticed the disappearance of large quantities of oil from his depot over a period of months and in an attempt to catch the perpetrators, he lay in wait at his premises last Monday night, February 15. using a new CCTV security system from Lock Up alarms
His diligence was rewarded as he spotted the thieves using high-tech pumping equipment to siphon the fuel off into a waiting tanker. He contacted the gardai and two arrests were made.
The drama unfolded at the Sligo Fuels premises at Deepwater Quay around 10pm last Monday night. Damien had been watching the premises since closing time, after staff had pointed to the reduced levels in the oil tanks located beneath the forecourt.
Damien told the reporters that, around 10pm, a number of men arrived with a tanker and drew close to one of their storage tanks. They hooked the nozzle up to the tank and began pumping the fuel out. Damien immediately contacted gardai who quickly arrived and arrested two men.
Detectives later seized a number of vehicles and high-tech pumping equipment which they suspect was used in the theft.
Sligo Fuels has had a problem with various forms of theft from their premises over a considerable period, but staff noticed that large quantities of oil and other fuel had been taken, amounting, Damien estimates, to around €100,000 in total.
The company added additional hi tech Lock Up Alarms cameras to their security system which contributed to the capture of last week's thieves. CCTV evidence is likely to be used in any prosecution for the theft.
Town Centre CCTV System
Lockup has started work on the Manorhamilton town centre CCTV system which is part funded by Pobal. The system will monitor seven locations in the town. This is the first project of its kind in the North West and will help the gardai, Local Business and residents of surrounding areas.
